PROJECT: LAVERSTOKE MILL DISTILLERY

Dating all the way back to 1086 in the Domesday Book, Laverstoke Mill has been a beloved marker of British industrial history. Originally producing corn and then paper, and then banknotes, the Mill was converted and extended in 2013 and opened to the public in 2014 by the Bombay Spirits Company to produce the well-known Bombay Sapphire gin.

The new mill site had great difficulties, not only did it contain three grade II listed buildings, but also an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and conservation area, with a rich natural surrounding, with native species in the nearby river. The end client, Bombay Spirits had the need of wanting to preserve and add to the site, with a sustainability vision, which it later won ‘outstanding’ BREEAM accreditation for the environmental achievements of the buildings.

The overall project required the demolition of derelict buildings, refurbishment of the site and building of the distillery and glasshouse. The designer for the project produced the beautiful glasshouse botanical concept, inspired by The Crystal Palace in Hyde Park and Kew Gardens.

To add to the 100sqm project, MEP Couch Perry Wilkes enlisted Complete Utility Solutions to provide a range of utility services.

For the gas services, after applying to the network on behalf of the clients, we reinforced pre-existing gas networks and installed a gas meter. We also provided and installed a gas valve access chamber, with building entry and emergency control valves. In addition to this, we excavated, backfilled and reinstated off-site trenches, after gaining local authority permits and road opening notices, as always. Our services included designing and submitting plans to the network, as well as project coordination.

We enjoyed being part of a project that encapsulates great construction, which is focused on design, reinvention, sustainability and industrial growth, and look forward to the continual development of the historic and scientific landmark that is Laverstoke Mill.
